Call for Submissions 2018
RE: The Current Narrative of Collecting Women’s Art: told by the membership
Call to current members and new members interested in seeing the development of women’s art.
The Current Narrative will open March 8, 2018 for International Women’s Day (Press for Progress theme) and run until April 20, 2018.
We are setting up a platform for members to present their perceptions on collecting women’s art. Why do women inhabit only 30% or less of today’s museum spaces, and why haven’t those numbers changed significantly in the last twenty years? Scholars, curators and art critics argue many different reasons but perhaps it’s time to make our own voices heard. Step outside the norm to reflect on the idea of women’s art, and what it means in today’s society? What are the important factors of female visual culture? Do we place emphasis on the style, medium, versatility, subject matter, aesthetics, concept, permanence or place of creation? Is it possible that the previous descriptions have outlived their usefulness and that we need to develop new terminology? We are asking for your input and speculations on a subject that is vitally important in the development of women’s sense of belonging in a history that is often unfolding without us.
Help us weave a narrative which speaks to the current concerns of female visual culture. We are asking artists to donate Postal Art or Correspondence Art with their input. You may say as little or as much as you like as long as the contents fit into a standard envelope and does not exceed 8 ½” x 11”. Send us anything that will represent your thoughts on this subject.
Here are a few definitions to help you out:
Correspondence Art: is text based work (notes, letters, poems and stories) Postal Art: is any form of art (postcards, photos, drawings, paintings, collage, fiber work, or hand crafted objects).
Submissions will be incorporated into the museum collection once the exhibit is over. We intend to run similar requests in subsequent years to see the progression of ideas, so please include a date and name on each item. If you are sending art work, please include a note to clarify your narrative in this discussion. Please include a short bio or a CV and the value of your submission as well.
Postal submissions will be accepted until March 8, 2018 at noon. The opening will be on March 8, 2018 from 6:30PM to 9PM as a sign of solidarity with all women who speak out on equality on International Women’s Day.
Attention: Women’s Art (on the envelope)
